CIVIL SERVICES APTITUDE TEST: 10 INITIAL STEPS TO BE TAKEN:-

CIVIL SERVICES APTITUDE TEST: 10 INITIAL STEPS TO BE TAKEN:-

By Dr. Bijay Ketan Upadhyaya,I.A.S.
Rank 5, CSE 2008.

1. Whatever the test will be, one thing is for sure … The importance of Current Events will not decrease. In my opinion, its significance will increase. So it makes sense to go through 2 National Dailies everyday for 2-3 hours & jot down important news items. You can go through …
• The Hindu
• The Times of India
• The Economic Times (If possible)

2. You should make your mathematics, reasoning & mental ability side strong .For this you can begin with :-
• Quick math for Bank PO Exam by M Tyra
• Quantitative Aptitude & Reasoning by R S Agarwal
• Simple Aptitude & Mental ability books for Bank PO & NOT for CAT of IIMs will be helpful. CSAT will be a much simplified version of CAT.

3. Prepare one optional very well & General Studies. These two things you must be very strong. As the pattern of Prelims & Mains is not clear at this point.

4. Common books to be read in the initial days which will be important always :-
• Modern India by Bipan Chandra NCERT
• India Year Book
• Manorama Year Book
• NCERT 11th & 12th standard books on History, Geography & Economics
• General Science book of CBSE or NCERT 9th & 10th standard
• TMH General Studies Guide (Especially General Knowledge & General Mental Ability area will be helpful.)
• Our Constitution by Subhash Kashyap
• Our Parliament by Subhash Kashyap ( Optional )

5. Listen to All India Radio bulletins from 2 PM to 2.30 PM & 9 PM to 9.30 PM very well. Also listen to ND TV news bulletins & programmes like Big Fight, We The People, BBC World so that your General Knowledge expands.

6. Lucent’s General Knowledge will also help in this aspect.

7. Any Guide book on RBI Grade B will also shed light on the situation based question & questions testing your decision making ability.

8. Solve the Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning questions that come out in magazines like General Knowledge Today, Pratiyogita Darpan etc.

9. Read some basic economic book like :-
• Indian Economy : Problems & Prospects by Uma Kapila OR
• Indian Economy by Dutta, Sundharam ( Tougher & better )

10. Develop the skill to solve mathematical & reasoning problems faster. It comes with practice. So the sooner you start practicing, the better your chances of clearing CSAT in 2011 will be …

ALL WILL BE WELL … & DON’T WORRY TOO MUCH …

  1. should we concentrate much on Math n reasoning?

  2. Hi Saumya,

not much. But 20-30 % emphasis should be put on maths, reasoning, quantitative aptitude etc.Focus on EASY maths questions & NOT on DIFFICULT numericals & aptitude questions.Rest 70-80 % on current affairs & traditional areas which are favourite hunting grounds for UPSC ...

  9. Hello Sir,

I am residing in a very remote place, so i can only depend on the blogs for getting my queries cleared.

My query is regarding GS preparation. For economics, i have already begun with the NCERT book.

My query is regarding the book dutt sundaram. Is this book very important to read from cover to cover or selective studies only. If selective studies, which all topics have to be read from this book, as this book is quite bulky. And there are several other books to finish.

Plz help me sir. . .

    Mayuresh.

  13. Hi all,

I will answer one by one.

Sulbha,as per UPSC,2011 mains will be the same as before.A Committee is looking into 2012 Mains. They may suggest some changes. They may not, also.

Akanksha, arts subjects which are scoring are Psychology,Geography,Pub Ad,Sociology etc.But plz check your interest in these subjects, see their syllabus, last 2-3 years questions,1-2 basic books & then decide which Optionals to take. Now you should focus on NCERT Books,Hindu & 2-3 basic books in the optional of your choice.

Vaidehi,i don't have much idea about Odiya Litt.Still,u can search State Library in Bhubaneswar,Vani Vihar Library or Ravenshaw Library after consulting the Head of Dept,Odiya Litt Dept in these Universities. It may help.

  14. Hi Monu, i have suggested a "tentative" reading list for CSAT.You can go through some of them.

Mayuresh,Dutta Sundharam is very bulky.I also tried to read it full. But did not succeed.Better to go for Uma Kapila,as it is concise, less bulky, prescribed text in Delhi University,& some questions come directly from it.It is also a basic, fundamental book & a good one.Supplement it with Eco Survey & Hindu Economics Analysis news items.

Hi Prince,i will update soon on the topic "HOW TO STUDY PSYCHOLOGY FROM THE TEXT-BOOKS ?" & suggest some finer details about how to get maximum from these books. Please give me some time.

  15. Hi Bharath,

Arey yaar,I am just suggesting some reading materials as many aspirants asked me about it.Some basic reading "may help somebody".You may be knowing "EVERYTHING".
I am "just suggesting".You may read. You may not read.

YE KISI ZAMINDARI KI BEKARI NAHIN HAI,KE MARZI NA MARZI KARNA HI PADE !!!

    Regards,
    Bijay Ketan

  16. Hi Deepak,

You can focus now more on Basic Texts of GS & one optional. But 70-80 % focus on GS.Read the NCERT books,Hindu,Bipan Chandra,Uma Kapila,D D Basu etc. They help in making a solid BASE.Sometimes when you get bored by reading ONLY GS,u can switch to one optional (20-30% of ur time) till you become sure how many optionals are being kept for 2012 Mains,if at all. So,in the interregnum, you can make your GS & Current Events from Hindu very strong.

    All the best for 2012.
